Art Therapy is a creative form of psychotherapy that differs from traditional talk therapy practices. Art Therapy helps people of all ages resolve conflicts, reduce stress, foster alternate perspectives and enhance well-being and connection (Malchiodi, 2003).
The art making processes in therapy can help you unlock a sense of freedom, imagination while also creating new avenues to explore important life-themes and behavioral patterns in a safe space.
Your sessions will primarily consist of talk therapy, and together, you can decide on the amount of art making that feels right for you. When you create art, we may simply observe your process as you work, without interference or judgment. When you have finished a piece of artwork—and sometimes while you are still working on it—we may ask you insight-oriented questions about your artistic process, emotions, thoughts or body sensations that arose for you. We may also provide some insight-oriented observations as well. We do not “analyze” or judge your artwork!
At Davenport Creative Arts Therapy, we treat Depression, Anxiety & Trauma by infusing aspects of Mindfulness with Art Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to promote growth, reconnection, resilience and self-acceptance. We provide all of the art materials for you and art making is always an option (but not mandatory). You do not need to consider yourself "artistic" to benefit from the life-affirming experience of participating in Art Therapy.
Who are Art Therapists?
Art Therapists are Masters-level clinicians trained in psychotherapy and counseling methods in addition to clinical applications of art making. Art Therapists are required to complete, 1,000 hours of clinical internship experience, pass a national board certification examination, and have at least 1500 hours of post-graduate supervised clinical experience prior to licensure.
